Helen Hopcroft

Helen Hopcroft is an artist and a writer. She grew up on the island of Tasmania, studied Fine Arts at the Hobart Centre for the Arts (1989-1991), then moved to London and completed a Masters degree at the Royal College of Art (1992-1994). Returning to Australia to live in 2000, she participated in the Adelaide Festival with a solo exhibition of paintings. Her imagery and poetry featured on the festival poster and merchandise. Helen’s most recent solo exhibition was ‘Strange Tales’, a solo exhibition at Despard Gallery in mid 2012 . With Caelli Jo Brooker, she curated the recent ‘Year of the Bird’ exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

’100 women’ Helen’s first non-fiction book, co-written with Katharine Gillett of the Hunter Writers Centre, and published by the University of Newcastle, was launched in October 2011. Her publication list includes the Australian, Sydney Morning Herald, Ceramic Art & Perception, unsweetened, NAVA quarterly, ArtsHub.com and various sailing magazines. She has an essay titled ‘Metafur’ in the October 2013 edition of the Griffith Review, and is currently completing a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Newcastle.
